EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says
The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US on five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were central to efforts to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the rules are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.
